A SMILE CHANGES EVERYTHING
I’ve thought about writing this post for a while, and each time I opened up a blank post the song ‘You’re Never Fully Dressed Without Smile’ from Annie keep getting stuck in my head. It’s silly and cute, but stick with me here because it’s some great advice for the business world.
Before every e-mail I write, I pause for all of about two seconds and SMILE. With mass e-mail blasts and churning out content to thousands of people you don’t even know on social media, many of our digital interactions have become superficial, impersonal and bland. People on the other side of the screen can feel your energy - whether it be joyful, enthusiastic, anxious, angry or desperate. Before you start interacting, create a connection by smiling. Yes, even though you will look funny at home alone. It works, and the other person can pick up on this. Try it!
When I was growing up, my ideal of a successful woman was one wearing a business suit and was constantly exerting her power. After 10 years of experience in corporate culture, I’ve learned that true power is in maintaining a calm demeanor amidst turmoil, and truly understanding what it is that you want so that you can go after it. Flying off the handle isn’t a badge of honor. I’d much rather effectively communicate and try to listen more than I speak.
The photo above on the left was the image of me that I wanted to put out into the world, before I dug deep. I thought it made me look more serious and qualified. Now I see that it actually makes me look angry, distant and hard to approach. My new photos show me in my element, easy to connect with and open to listening and sharing.
I shifted and saw that smiling and practicing serenity while working with my clients helped me grow in business. I’ve had more people approach me and inquire about how I can help them grow, rather than vice versa. Even if I don’t end up signing a deal with a prospective client, I take it as a win. I still got to meet a new, interesting person and each interaction is helping me grow. I am grateful for their time and the feedback they have given me that allows me to adjust my message in order to connect even more with the next client.
And just to leave you with a smile, here’s another song to listen to while you send e-mails. When you’re smiling, the whole world smiles with you…
